Description
This is a two-storey and attic tenement block, dated 1869 and designed by James MacLaren and George Shaw Aitken. The building has a generally rectangular plan. The front elevation features bull-faced stone courses, while snecked rubble is used on the east side, with random rubble elsewhere. Ashlar dressings are present, some of which have been rendered with cement. The roof is slate-covered.
The building's architecture incorporates a base course, an irregular lintel course at the first floor level, and corbelling where windows are canted. The parapet is corbelled and corniced, and features a blind arcading detail. Gables rise through the parapet, showing exposed rafter and purlin ends, and are finished with plain bargeboards. The gables at the corners are jerkin-headed with finials. Windows are single and bipartite, originally with four-pane sash and case glazing, although the western half now has unsympathetic uPVC windows. The north elevation features chamfered jambs and segmental-headed windows in the attic.
The north elevation has seven symmetrical bays, with a recessed bay at the far right. A segmental doorway is centrally positioned, with a segmental fanlight, shoulder-arched, consoled, and pedimented doorpiece. There are two windows on either side at both the ground and first floors. Two wallhead gables are present in the attic. Single windows are located at ground floor on the extreme left and right, and a tripartite canted window sits on the first floor. A narrow recessed bay is at the outer right, containing a doorway with a segmental fanlight and rendered doorpiece, with a stair window above it. A window is present on the right return gable at ground, first, and attic floor levels.
The east elevation has a central segmental doorway with a fanlight and a formerly corniced, now casement rendered doorpiece. A bipartite window is located at the first floor, and a narrow segmental window breaks through the parapet in the wallhead gable, revealing protruding unfinished purlins.
The south elevation is symmetrical with six bays, including steps leading to a basement at its centre. Three bays are located on the left, incorporating a door with a margined doorpiece and flanking windows. A window stands on the left at ground level, followed by a bipartite window with a corbelled cill on the first floor. Two windows are located on the right. Two dormer-headed windows break through the eaves, with a gabled form on the left and a segmental form on the right, in addition to a central segmental dormer. The three bays on the right mirror the arrangement on the left.
The interior of the building has not been inspected.
