Description
Magnum House, located at 138-140 Seagate in Dundee, was designed by Cornelius Armour in 1934. This four-storey warehouse features a reinforced concrete frame and is clad in ashlar and metal, showcasing an art deco style.
The entrance is positioned at a chamfered angle and is adorned with a sculptured cartouche that depicts a ship and shells, along with the date of construction. Above the third floor, there is a stepped parapet decorated with a scallop motif and a flagpole.
On the Seagate elevation, the ground floor has been heavily altered. The upper windows are arranged in four recessed bays separated by plain chamfered pilasters. The outer bays contain two-light windows with stone aprons, while the central bays feature five-light windows with metal panels between the floors. The parapet above is plain.
The Queen Street elevation consists of five bays designed in a similar style, with windows arranged in a pattern of five, two, two, five, and two lights. The ground floor remains intact, featuring windows set in recessed margins with keystones, and a loading door on the left. The original metal-framed casement and top-hopper windows are still present.
The rear of the building has been altered, with a reinforced concrete frame, brick infill, and new windows. It has a flat roof.
