Description
West Bond, located at 2-4 Candle Lane in Dundee, is a significant building designed by David Baxter of Johnston and Baxter in 1907. This large structure consists of four and five stories, plus a basement, and is primarily clad in brick. The building features a combination of timber flooring and reinforced concrete framing.
The West Bond section, situated at the corner of Candle Lane and Seagate, has a five-story elevation that is dated 1907. The Seagate facade has three bays with tripartite windows and cill courses that are recessed within a four-story arcade. The third floor includes Diocktion windows with drip moulds above the arcade. The parapet is corbelled and crenellated, topped with a central wall-headed crow-stepped gable that contains an arched window and the date. The first bay facing Candle Lane mirrors this design, featuring tripartite windows within a recessed five-story arch and a crow-stepped gable. To the right, there are nine bays with single windows and end bipartites above ground floor doors, all supported by stone cill courses. The building has had its stacks removed, and the south and east elevations are blank. It is topped with a slate roof.
The North Bond facing Seagate presents a symmetrical five-story, seven-bay facade. The ground floor features arched windows and a central doorway that was originally arched but has since been enlarged, with an ashlar base, voussoirs, and decorative bands. The upper floors have segmental arched windows with ashlar cill courses. The centre bay and corners are accentuated by pilaster strips made of ashlar and brick stripes. The facade is finished with a mutule cornice and a central open pediment, while the parapet is adorned with square-section balusters and obelisk finials on the pilasters.
The Mid and South Bonds, which face Trades Lane, are designed in a similar style but with fewer stone details. The Mid Bond is five stories and the South Bond is four stories, both featuring eight-bay asymmetrical blocks. The ground floor is arcaded with brick voussoirs and includes three arched corniced doorways, two of which retain their original doors, while one entrance has been altered. These sections also have pilaster strips and open pediments, with a parapet that includes square balusters and dies but lacks urns. The south elevation has some simple windows, while the return to McLeish's and the yard elevation are blank. Both sections have flat concrete roofs.
Inside, the West Bond features timber floors supported by cast-iron columns and wide-span timber and wrought-iron roofs. The South, Mid, and North Bonds are framed and floored with reinforced concrete using the Hennebique system.
