Description

Customs Bond No.2, located on Candle Lane in Dundee, was designed by Christopher J Bisset and completed in 1868, with a top floor added by Charles and Leslie Ower in 1878. This building is three stories tall with a basement, constructed from snecked squared rubble featuring ashlar dressings, and serves as a whisky bond.

The front facing Seagate has a five-bay design with Renaissance details. The ground floor is channeled ashlar and includes two depressed arched loading doors, one of which has been altered to a window, both featuring dated keystones from 1868. Above, there are three round-headed windows with aprons and a cornice over the ground floor. The first and second floors are accented by ashlar angle pilasters, with segmental-headed windows that include a cill course on the first floor and corbelled cills on the second. A main cornice and blocking course is present, stepped up at the center, and cast iron wheatsheaf chimney cans are located at the corners.

The long elevation facing Candle Lane features a mix of original segmental-headed windows and newly inserted flat-headed windows, with a band course at the basement and first floor cill levels. Cast-iron tie plates can be seen towards the south. The south elevation is harled due to the removal of further warehouses.

The building has piended slate roofs and new sash and case windows on the street elevations, with a bar that has been removed.

Inside, the building was converted to flats between 1984 and 1985, while the basement car park retains its original appearance. The basement and ground floors feature fireproof cast-iron columns and beams, brick arches, and wrought-iron ties, while the upper floors are constructed with timber post and beam. A new lightwell has been sunk along the west side.
