Description

Melford, located at 4 Duntrune Terrace in Dundee, is a 2-storey, 5-bay villa built in 1927 by George C Morton of Bruce, Son and Morton. This later Arts and Crafts-style building features a rectangular plan, constructed of brick and harl with a grey slate roof. The windows are primarily bi- and tripartite, with top-hinged casement designs and leaded panes set in metal frames. Notable architectural details include a cill course at the first floor, a moulded wallhead course, deep eaves, and tall ashlar-capped stacks with brick courses and identical cans, all topped with a piended roof.

On the south elevation, there is a keystoned, round-headed, moulded doorpiece at the center that leads to a recessed two-leaf door. Flanking this are single-storey, flat-roofed canted windows with moulded cornices, paired multi-pane round-headed French doors at the far left, and similar unglazed arches at the far right that form a loggia. The first floor features five tripartite windows.

The west elevation has a canted window at the center of the ground floor and two windows on the first floor. The east elevation includes a round-headed window at the ground floor left, two windows on the right, and two more at the first floor. There is a single-storey projection at the far right that forms an L-plan with a garage at the right return.

On the north elevation, there is a stair window at the center, along with windows on both the ground and first floors.

Inside, the villa retains four original chimneypieces, a half-panelled well stair with turned balusters, and plaster ceiling decoration featuring a foliate pattern. Additional features include a service lift and a boarded telephone cupboard located under the stairs.

The property is enclosed by round-coped rubble walls on the north, south, and west sides, with three chamfered ashlar gatepiers on the west.
