Description

Cox's Stack, located at the Camperdown Works on Methven Street in Dundee, was designed by G A Cox in collaboration with James Maclaren and built between 1865 and 1866. This impressive chimney stands at 282 feet 10 inches tall and is styled like an Italian campanile, featuring polychrome brickwork set on an ashlar base, making it a notable landmark.

The base is constructed from battered channelled ashlar and includes small arched openings. Above this, there is a tall square-section plinth adorned with angle pilasters and corbels made of yellow brick. The main shaft features angle pilasters with alternating red and yellow horizontal bands. Each elevation has tall recessed sections with nine slit windows, topped by a round-headed arch over an oculus.

The design includes paired Romanesque arches and a Greek key motif above, along with a large cornice. The top section is octagonal, with each face featuring a recessed arch, although the top coping and urns have been removed.

Inside, the chimney has a circular-section flue within the square-section stack, with one of the angles utilized as a ladder.
