Description

63-73 King Street in Dundee is an iron-framed flax mill built around 1830-1840, which was later converted into a warehouse and then into offices for Low and Bonar by R Gibson around 1913.

The elevation facing King Street was remodeled around 1913 and features a two-storey, 14-bay commercial block constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. There are three arched entrances located at the center and end bays of the ground floor, two of which are loading bays, while the western bay serves as the entrance to the office, featuring an original door beneath a leaded Diocletian window. The first floor has bipartite and tripartite windows above the entrances, with sash and case windows that have corbelled cills and leaded upper panes. The building is topped with a cornice and parapet that includes a central Art Nouveau curvilinear pediment above an attic Diocletian window. The rear elevation, excluding the western wing, retains much of its original 1830s rubble construction.

The structure has four storeys, with two of them below road level, which are part of the East Port Works. A projecting circular stair with a conical slate roof is present, and the top floor window has been altered to a bipartite design. The roof is covered with slate.

Inside, the ground floor from King Street features two rows of cast-iron columns that support brick arches, cast-iron beams, and wrought-iron ties, with some partitions still intact. The first floor has been remodeled into office space, also supported by two rows of Doric cast-iron columns. Notable interior features include a fine panelled marble stair with a lift in the well, a stained glass window, and Ionic pilastered entrances. The attic has been altered.
