Description
The Knowe is an earlier 19th century farmhouse with an associated steading, situated within a cobbled courtyard. The farmhouse itself is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure with additional, asymmetrical ranges extending to the rear (west). The house is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar dressings. Its east elevation features a depressed-arched doorway within a central gabled porch of ashlar. All window and door openings are hood-moulded. The windows are a mix of single casement windows and sash windows with 12-pane glazing. The roofline exhibits saw-toothed skews, and has corniced end stacks. A single bay of the rear range is deeply recessed to the right. The rear courtyard elevation is asymmetrical.
The steading comprises three ranges arranged in a U-plan. The west range is a tall barn, featuring two segmental-arched cartways – one partially blocked – as well as external doors on both levels and a modern forestair. The north range incorporates axial roof ventilators and a full-length, long barn addition to the roadside elevation. The south range includes a 2-storey former bothy at its eastern end. The majority of the buildings are roofed with graded slates.
