Description
An earlier 19th century farmhouse and steading complex, known as The Knowe. The farmhouse is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure with asymmetrical ranges extending to the rear (west), and a cobbled courtyard leading to a steading. The farmhouse is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar dressings. The east elevation features a depressed-arched door within a central gabled ashlar porch; all openings are hood-moulded, with one casement window and the remainder being sash windows with 12-pane glazing. The roof has saw-toothed skews, corniced end stacks, and a single deeply-recessed bay of the rear range to the right. The courtyard elevation is asymmetrical. The steading comprises three adjoining ranges arranged in a U-plan. The west range is a tall barn with two segmental-arched cartways, one partially blocked, with outer doors at each level and a modern forestair. The north range has axial roof ventilators and a full-length barn added to the roadside elevation. The south range incorporates a 2-storey former bothy at the east end. The majority of the roofs are covered with graded slates.
