South East Range, Stables, Gretna Hall Hotels, Gretna Green

Dated 1710, the South East Range forms part of a group of stables encompassing four ranges arranged around a cobbled quadrangular court. Not all ranges appear to be contemporary, with the South East range potentially being a later addition. The ranges are two storeys in height, with a consistent eaves line. They are constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, and have been whitewashed with contrasting painted margins. The roofs are slated. A depressed-arched pend is located on the East range, with upper openings close to square. The West range features large openings and a round-headed window, topped with a small, piended roof. The South East range has been altered, with a tearoom and shop on the ground floor and a flat-roofed domestic dwelling, called “Elmwood,” above. The date “1710” is inscribed on the keystone of the pend, and a fire insurance badge remains in place above. The statutory address is Gretna Green, Gretna Hall Former Stables, including Elmwood.
