South West Range, Stables, Gretna Hall Hotels, Gretna Green

Dated 1710, the South West Range forms part of a group of stables built around a cobbled quadrangular court. Not all ranges are necessarily contemporary; the South West Range may be an addition. The building is two storeys high, with a uniform eaves level, and is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. It is whitewashed with contrasting painted margins and has slated roofs. A depressed-arched pend (entryway) is on the East range, featuring almost square upper openings for a loft. The West range has large openings, including a round-headed window with a piended roof. The South West Range has been altered with a tearoom/shop at ground level and a domestic flat, named “Elmwood,” above. The date is inscribed on the keystone of the pend, and a fire insurance badge survives above. The statutory address is Gretna Green, Gretna Hall Former Stables, including Elmwood.
