North West Range, Stables, Gretna Hall Hotels, Gretna Green

Dated 1710, the North West Range forms part of a complex of stables built around a cobbled quadrangular courtyard. The stables are composed of four ranges, though it is possible that one, particularly the South range, was added later. They are two and three storeys high, with a uniform eaves line. The building is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings, and has been whitewashed with contrasting painted margins. The roofs are slated. A tall, depressed-arched pend is located on the East range; the upper openings are almost square. The West range features large openings and a round-headed window, and has an individual piended roof. The South range has been altered, with a tearoom and shop at ground level, and a domestic flat ("Elmwood") above. The date "1710" is inscribed on the keystone of the pend, and a fire insurance badge survives above.
