Old Blacksmiths Shop, Bensmoor Road, Springfield

The Old Blacksmith’s Shop, located on Bensmoor Road in Springfield, is a group of three, single-storey cottages, originally arranged as a row, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building has undergone alterations over time. Constructed primarily of rubble, it features ashlar and brick dressings, and is whitewashed with painted margins. The westernmost cottage likely dates to 1713 and retains long, squared rubble quoins and brick jambs. The central cottage has a wide, gabled front with a large, intersecting Y-traceried window. A brick porch is attached to the easternmost cottage, and a large slate “slapping” feature is visible in the east gable. Brick stacks rise from the roof, which is slate and swept over a full-width rear projection. The Statutory address is Springfield Village, Old Blacksmith’s Shop and Smithy.
