Description
Martinton Bridge is a railway viaduct that was opened on October 15, 1849, as part of the Dumfries-Closeburn line, designed by engineer John Miller. The bridge carries double tracks and features three wide, skewed segmental arches over the River Nith, along with seven smaller arches on the low north bank. There is also a narrow round-headed pedestrian archway to the south. The entire structure is constructed from red sandstone, with the wide arches featuring channelled bullfaced ashlar and piers that have cutwaters. The arches are adorned with rusticated voissoirs and outer pilaster strips that are linked by a continuous string course. An iron handrail runs along the bridge. The smaller arches to the north are built of squared rubble, with ashlar dressings and a band below the parapets.
