Description
The Nith Viaduct, located in Dumfries, is a railway viaduct that was part of the Castle Douglas-Dumfries line, which opened on November 7, 1859. This long, curving structure was originally designed to carry double track, although one track has now been removed. The viaduct is constructed entirely of red sandstone and features six skewed wide segmental arches, primarily made of bull-faced ashlar, including the voussoirs. The outer arches are designed for flood relief, and the piers have cutwaters on either side. Additionally, there are four smaller dry arches on the eastern (Dumfriesshire) bank that are simply treated. The viaduct also includes outer pilaster strips and terminal piers, topped with a shallow parapet made of droved ashlar.
