Description

Kettle Cottage is an early 19th century cottage, originally a row of two, three-bay cottages, with later additions and alterations. The cottage is constructed of whitewashed whinstone rubble.

The south elevation shows that each original three-bay cottage had a central door flanked by windows; the door to the left-hand cottage is now blocked. A gabled and rendered, modern porch has been added to the door of the right-hand cottage. Some windows have been enlarged. There is a blank gable to the west and a small, lower gabled addition to the east gable, to the north, built in matching materials and featuring a window to the south. The windows are square with timber casements and a distinctive trellised glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey graded slates, with grey slates on the additions. The east gable has a raised skew with an ashlar cope, while the west gable has a similar treatment. Mutual gable and end stacks are present, with a sandstone ridge.

A decorative cast-iron lamp standard with a lantern stands beside the roadside to the west.

A rubble whinstone boundary wall surrounds the property.

Kettle Cottage, formerly known as Smithy Row, is part of the small group of cottages that form Glasserton village. The distinctive glazing pattern, likely dating from after 1850, is also seen at the neighbouring Posting House (listed separately). Shared characteristics between the cottages suggest possible estate involvement in renovations during the mid to later 19th century. The cottage appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1850.
