Description

Ninian House is an early 19th century cottage, located roadside in the village of Glasserton. Originally comprised of two, then four-bay cottages, it was later combined into a single dwelling with an addition to the east, constructed after 1850. The building is constructed from whitewashed whinstone rubble.

The north elevation has a door in the penultimate bay from the right, and windows in the remaining bays, with some enlargements. The east elevation has been altered with an M-shaped gable created by the addition to the south. The gabled bay to the left has two small-pane windows, while a wide door has been inserted into the gabled bay to the right. A flat-roofed addition extends from the rear.

The windows on the north side are sash and case, with diamond-pane glazing. Timber window frames are found in the house portion, while metal frames are used in the workshop. The roof is covered in graded grey slates, with sandstone ridge details, an end stack to the west, and cast-iron gutters.

Ninian House is one of a small group of cottages in Glasserton, each linked by shared characteristics, suggesting construction or renovation occurred in the mid to later 19th century. It was formerly known as Item No 5. The 1850 first edition Ordnance Survey map shows the building in its original form.
