Description
32-40 George Street in Dumfries is a late Georgian terraced row of houses, likely built around 1830. The two-storey buildings feature railed basements and attics, and are arranged in a near-symmetrical layout. The design includes a depressed-arched pend in a shallow, advanced off-centre bay. The exterior is made of polished red ashlar, which is mostly painted, and has channeling at the ground level with rusticated flat window arches.
To the left of the pend are three two-storey houses, while to the right is a single five-bay house (number 32), which was originally free-standing. This house has a depressed-arched doorway and a later 19th-century columned porch, along with panelled doors that feature fanlights. The windows are sash style, mostly with glazing bars. Additional architectural details include a string course at the first-floor cill level, an eaves course, a cornice, a blocking course, three dormers, end stacks, and slate roofs. Above the pend, there is a single window set within a recessed segmental-arched panel.
