Description

Moorhead's Hospital, located at 103-107 St Michael Street in Dumfries, was built between 1751 and 1753 as a paupers' hospital by contractors James Harley and Alexander Crombie. The building is two storeys high and is set above a basement, featuring a symmetrical H-plan design with a three-bay center and advanced single outer bays. The exterior is finished in painted render with contrasting ashlar margins.

The principal elevation faces east and includes a rusticated central doorway, which has a modern door, approached by steps. Above the doorway is a shaped panel that connects to the first-floor cill of a possibly enlarged timber-mullioned tripartite window. The windows are plate glass sash, and the building features an eaves and lintel band, a cornice, and a pair of massive axial stacks. Additionally, there is an open-worked timber axial ventilator and slated pavilion roofs. There is also a rear addition to the building.
