Description
Saint Michael's Bridge in Dumfries is a road bridge designed by engineer J B Brodie and built in 1927. It carries the A756 over the River Nith and features three segmental arches, along with a smaller pedestrian arch on the western bank. The bridge is constructed from reinforced concrete and is clad in red ashlar, which is mostly snecked and bull-faced, with polished voussoirs and parapet coping. There are pointed cutwaters on either side of the bridge, with carved panels above them, and the northern cutwaters are made of pink granite. The roadway and parapets slope from the western side to the lower eastern bank. Additionally, the bridge includes cast-iron lamp brackets and circular terminal piers with conical caps on the parapets, which curve outward at the eastern end.
