Description
Netherwood House is an early 19th-century country house designed by Walter Newall. It features a symmetrical, two-storey, five-bay bow-fronted structure with single-storey flanking wings connected by narrow linking bays. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar. The west elevation showcases shallow advanced bows on the outer bays, each consisting of two bays with rusticated quoins. The central bay contains a recessed panelled door, fanlight, and sidelight, all framed by a shallow Roman Doric screen. The windows are all sash and case with a 12-paned glazing pattern, and there is a cill band on the first floor. The building is topped with a cornice and a blocking course over the inner bay, featuring end stacks and a piended slate roof that curves over the bows. The wings have intersecting tracery in the linking bays and four-bay flanks, while the east elevation includes Roman-Doric columned shelters that connect the central projection to the wings.
Inside, there is a cantilevered stair with decorative cast-iron balusters, illuminated by a cupola, and panelled doors set in architraves. The gatepiers on the main drive, which may not be in their original setting, are hollow square cast-iron piers with cross-braced ties in a lattice pattern and topped with ball-finialed pyramidal caps. The gates and railings also feature a lattice pattern, with the gates having urn finials. Additionally, there are gatepiers at the lodge, which consist of corniced round piers linked by curved low quadrant walls (the railings have been removed). These piers are also painted ashlar, with the ball finials removed from the tall inner piers, leaving the remaining piers with domed caps.
