Description
Carmont House is a detached villa-style hospital block built between 1900 and 1904, designed by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson. It forms part of the Crichton Royal Hospital complex, located on Bankend Road, Dumfries. The building was originally constructed as a male infirmary, with a separate block (Rutherford House) built for female patients.
The architectural style is symmetrical on the south elevation, which is mostly two storeys high, while other elevations are asymmetrical. A three-storey block extends northwards from the east end of a walled court, which is closed to the west by a single-storey range. The exterior is constructed from snecked bullfaced red ashlar with polished dressings and channelled pilaster strips. Some ground-floor windows have keystoned lintels, and band courses run at some sill levels. The south elevation features a canted section and a blocked section with bipartites, linked by an open timber verandah. The verandah has six bays, including a single masonry bay with a door, and single windows above, positioned between the pilaster strips. A low, single-storey range adjoins the building to the east. The north-facing three-storey block has a pilastered doorcase with sidelights and a parapet, alongside a two-storey canted window. The west elevation incorporates an advanced inner bay with an open pedimented gable and tripartites, creating a Venetian-style window on the first floor. A three-light stair window with stepped cills and small-paned windows opens into the walled court. Eaves bands, corniced stacks, paired brackets supporting projecting eaves, and slate roofs complete the exterior detailing. Some original drawings are held by the Crichton Royal Hospital, and further information and a photograph can be found in Easterbrook's The Chronicle of the Crichton Royal (1940).
