Description
The building at 42-44 Buccleuch Street in Dumfries, designed by W W Robertson and dated 1887, is a former post office in the Scottish Jacobean style. It stands two storeys tall with a railed basement. The façade features a wide gable that is off-centre, with a door accessed by a small flight of steps and a single segmental-arched window at ground level. Above, the first floor has a corbelled window with a transom and three lights, along with decorative skews topped with finials.
To the left, there is a single recessed bay containing two windows at ground level, while to the right, two bays are recessed with a balustraded low square projection in the re-entrant angle. The first-floor windows extend through the eaves and are topped with pedimented dormer heads. The building is constructed of stugged red coursers with polished dressings, featuring moulded reveals, stepped strings, crow-stepped gables, and coped end stacks. The roof is slate-covered, and similar detailing is found on the eastern gable. Additionally, there are cast-iron railings linked to square piers.
