Description
Rockhall is a composite L-plan house, likely incorporating a tower house at the west, with its current form established in the first half of the 18th century. Some windows were enlarged in the early 19th century, and the interior was remodeled around 1880 by James Barbour, with further alterations by J M Bowie around 1915. The house faces southwest and has three storeys, constructed of whitewashed rubble with red ashlar margins and regularly placed small-paned sash windows.
A stair turret is located in the re-entrant angle, featuring small windows, a blocked door, and a shallow-pitched roof. The main entrance is alongside the turret in the east range, which includes a crest above and two bays beyond. The west range extends one bay from the stair turret and is blank at ground level, with small, low ground floor windows on the northwest elevation and a fire escape against the southeast gable. Stair windows, added by Barbour, are located at the rear above a modern function room, and there are outbuildings that are two storeys high with three bays and a T-plan roof, now linked to the house. The property features corniced stacks and slate roofs.
Inside, there is a turnpike stair in the turret and a wooden stair by Barbour leading to the rear above the ground floor, with the lower part likely removed when the function room was built. An irregular narrow corridor runs the length of the house between the two ranges. Some decorative 19th-century plasterwork can be found in the east range, and the barrel-vaulted ceiling of the bar is a dummy at least at the north end. The square gatepiers, presumably by either Barbour or Bowie, have projecting caps with engaged ball finials, along with curved, low quadrant walls featuring spiked cast-iron railings and similar gates.
