Description
This early 19th-century stable block comprises three piend-roofed, two-storey, three-bay buildings arranged around a courtyard. The west elevation is enclosed by a boundary wall incorporating a pair of elegantly decorated ashlar gatepiers. The stable block is constructed of rubble walling with granite quoins and polished red sandstone margins.
The northern range originally housed a cartshed with an arched entrance and stables, with hay lofts above. The hay lofts have been emptied, and a window has been re-opened in the first north range, featuring concrete jambs. The buildings are currently being converted into a dwellinghouse. The piend roofs are partially slated and partially covered with corrugated sheet metal. Boarded doors are present.
A rubble wall with red sandstone coping runs along the west side, punctuated by a pair of tall, square ashlar gatepiers. These gatepiers feature delicately incised detailing at the “necking,” a cornice, and ball finials.
The east wing has been reslated. Planning permission for a change of use and alterations was granted in 1985, but has since lapsed.
