Description

Lochmaben Parish Church is a Gothic church designed by architect Walter Newall, built between 1819 and 1820. It has a rectangular plan with four bays and is located at the south end of High Street, facing the Town House with its north gable. The church features a central three-stage square tower, which is part of the principal north elevation and includes 14th-century bells. The exterior is constructed of red ashlar stone, while the rest is built from rubble. It has hood-moulded pointed openings throughout, with small-paned glazing that includes wooden tracery, and cusped and latticed designs on the north side. A lean-to vestry, added in 1959, is rendered and located at the south end, featuring lancet windows.

The tower has a door in the re-entrant angle, with the original vestry situated in the inner stage. The top stage of the tower includes louvred belfry openings, and a pierced parapet connects spiked pinnacles at the corners. Similar pinnacles are found above shallow angle buttresses on the north side, while the south gable is crow-stepped. The roof is covered with slate.

Inside, the church features a cusped Gothic pulpit, an organ, and a communion table at the north end, along with ground-level seating, all of which are replacements, possibly by Frank Carruthers around 1880. The church has an unusually complete and deep horseshoe gallery that is original, supported by timber columns with two tiers at the south. The pews are named and numbered, equipped with timber snecks. The ceiling is ribbed and flat.

The church is enclosed by low boundary walls made of rubble with ashlar coping, and there are corniced piers at the north end.
