Description

Waterbeck Church is a plain 19th-century church built in 1869, featuring a first pointed Gothic style. It is accompanied by a manse constructed in 1868 to the west, connected by a narrow link. Both the church and manse are made of channelled bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings and hoodmoulds, topped with slate roofs.

The church has a T-plan layout, with twin-gabled east and west transepts. It includes a plain square tower with a broach spire located in the southwest re-entrant angle, and a gabled porch at its base. The main roof sweeps over the porch in the corresponding southeast re-entrant angle. The tower features gabled louvred belfry openings on all sides, which break the eaves, and has south-facing doors. Each main gable has three tall lancets, with the southern ones having hoodmoulds that step to link with the eaves, along with a quatrefoil and a cross finial. The skews are saw-toothed.

Inside, there are three south windows made by Wm Meikle and Sons of Glasgow, as well as a single west transept window, all of which serve as World War I memorial windows. The pulpit, located on the north gable, features simple Gothic detailing and a pointed backboard, with exposed main roof timbers resting on stone corbels.

The manse is two storeys tall and asymmetrical, incorporating Gothic details. The southeast elevation consists of three bays, with the left bay containing single windows and a lean-to porch that has a hood-moulded pointed doorway. The front wall of the porch is on the same plane as the advanced remaining bays. The central bay is gabled and features a plate-traceried tall stair window, while the right bay has bipartite windows under a piended roof. The manse also has saw-toothed skews and coped end stacks. The link to the church includes a south-facing door.

There is a rubble-built boundary wall to the south, which features cusped cast-iron railings that connect square gatepiers topped with gabletted caps.
