Description
Shaw House is a circa 1800, two-storey, three-bay Classical house, originally a farmhouse. It has a plain rear wing. The main structure is built of mostly whin rubble, with red ashlar dressings, while the rear wing has a harled finish. The south elevation features a painted, central Roman Doric-columned wide porch, with a round-headed doorway and sidelights framed by pilastered jambs. The doorway has a panelled door and fanlight. Above the door is a tripartite window with blind outer lights. The ground floor windows have cornices, and all windows are 12-pane sashes with guttae detailing to the cills. An eaves/lintel band, a corniced detail, and a blocking course (raised over the central window) are present. A single corniced end stack remains, and the roof is piended and covered with graded slates.
The interior contains panelled doors within architraves, a depressed-arched screen in the hall below a cantilevered staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters. There is also some ceiling plasterwork, dado panelling, and chimney pieces. The steading is not included in the listing.
