Description

Gillesbie House is likely from the mid-19th century but incorporates an earlier house located at the rear of the property. It is a medium-sized, two-storey mansion built in an L-plan with classical details. The main structure is built primarily of rock-faced whin ashlar laid in graduated courses, with polished red ashlar dressings and architraves. The original house at the rear is rubble-built with ashlar dressings. Around 1923, some alterations were made to the building.

The south-facing elevation features two-bay outer pavilions that are asymmetrically advanced. A porch and a three-light window are situated in the re-entrant angle, added around 1923. The other windows are sash windows with 12 panes of glass, which are corniced at ground level and have architraves that connect to the base course. Paired windows on the first floor have cills that are linked. An eaves course and cornice run along the elevation. Chimneys with octagonal flues are largely grouped together. The roof of the building is piended and covered with graduated slates. The west-facing elevation has a near-central doorway and is arranged in three plus three plus two bays.

The original house has been altered and is now tripartite in plan, with dormers in the wallhead and a steep-pitched roof. A low wing adjoins the building at the north. The interior features extensive timber panelling, presumed to be contemporary with the porch.
