Description
Carsluith Cornmill is a water-powered grain mill dating to 1817, with a detached round-ended barn to the north.
The mill is a rectangular rubble building with squared granite margins and quoins, built into the natural slope of the land. A wheelpit is present in the west gable, although the water wheel itself has been removed. Internal machinery remains, including gearing and two pairs of millstones. The mill features granite end skews, a ball finial at the apex of the east gable, and good graded slate roofs with a sandstone ridge.
The barn is a long, rubble-built structure. The ground falls steeply to the south, resulting in a rounded, apsed end, with a stepped internal floor level. Squared rubble is visible around the openings, which include ventilating slits. It has good graded slate roofs.
The barn’s round-ended shape is unusual. It was not used as a corn-drying kiln or a horse mill, and its precise function beyond being a barn and byre is unknown. The rounded end may have been a practical solution due to a lack of suitable freestone locally. The buildings are dramatically sited.
