Description
The site includes a water-powered grain mill and a detached round-ended barn, dated 1817 above the mill door. The mill is a rectangular rubble building with squared granite margins and quoins, built into the slope of the land. A wheelpit is located in the west gable, although the wheel itself has been removed. Some internal machinery remains, including gearing and two pairs of millstones. The mill has granite end skew stones, a ball finial at the apex of the east gable, and good graded slate roofs, with a sandstone ridge.
The round-ended barn is long and built of rubble, with squared rubble used around the openings, which contain ventilating slits. The site falls steeply at the south end of the barn, and the end is apsed; the internal floor level is stepped accordingly. It is roofed with good graded slate. The round-ended barn's purpose is unclear, as it seems neither a corn drying kiln nor a horse mill, and its specialised use is unknown beyond being a barn and byre. The round end may have been a consequence of a limited availability of freestone locally, representing the easiest and cheapest building solution. The barn is situated in a dramatic setting.
