Description
The gate piers at West Gate, Monreith, date from the early to earlier 19th century. There are three gate piers with adjoining wing walls that support railings. The gate piers are made of red sandstone ashlar and have a square section that is rounded on each face at the top. Each pier features a carved heraldic shield on the west face, with the pier to the left of the vehicular gateway inscribed "Pax Intrantibus" and the pier to the right inscribed "Salus Exeuntibus." The site includes decorative wrought-iron pedestrian and vehicular gates. The low curved wing walls are constructed of rubble and topped with red sandstone saddleback coping. These walls are surmounted by decorative iron railings that have widely spaced balusters and fleur-de-lis detailing, though some parts are missing.
