Description
The stables, dating to around 1805, were likely designed by the architect of Gelston Castle, possibly Richard Crichton. They form an ornamental stable block with four two-storey ranges arranged around a courtyard. The rear elevations are built of painted rubble or brick, while the facade is of finely droved red ashlar. The stables were converted into a holiday flat complex around 1970.
The main facade is symmetrical and displays a Gothic castellated style, with taller pavilions at each end. These pavilions feature arched carriage entrances at ground level. A hexagonal tower rises above the central pend, incorporating a corbelled crenellated parapet with small corbelled angle bartizans. The two-stage tower also has a similarly detailed parapet, hood-moulded bipartites to the first stage, and single lights to the second stage, all topped by a corbelled parapet. The side ranges to the south, east, and west have numerous inserted windows with concrete painted margins, some set within blocked cart arches. These windows are all multi-pane sashes, and all ranges have slate roofs.
To the west, ornamental walls are constructed of bull-faced rubble with a crenellated parapet and decorative arrow slits. A Roman Doric xedra niche is included in this western wall. A coped rubble wall forms a boundary to the garden behind the stables. The stables are part of the larger Gelston Castle group.
