Description
Robgill Tower is a medium-scale mansion with several building phases, primarily from the late 18th to early 19th century, with its core originating from a 16th-century tower. It is dramatically situated above a steep cliff and features a high buttressed and crenellated retaining wall. The building mainly consists of three storeys and is constructed of rubble with red ashlar dressings.
The tower is located at the north end and includes a vaulted basement. The upper walling has been rebuilt and altered around 1870. The building was more than doubled in width by a late 18th or early 19th-century range to the south, which has a full-height east-facing bow that overlooks the cliff and three regular bays to the south. There is a square linking bay at the east that is carried a storey higher.
An extension to the west was made around 1840, featuring a north-south oriented range with some mullioned windows and others with lying-panes. The entrance tower is crenellated and off-centre, with steps leading to the door and a corbelled oriel. The building has end and axial stacks, blocked eaves, and slate roofs that curve over the bow.
