Description
85 Port Street in Annan is a long, two-storey row of buildings, likely constructed in the first half of the 19th century. This row includes a warehouse range, known as Welldale Mill, and a row of workers' housing, with a continuous roofline that is interrupted by an archway linking the two ranges. The archway features a single-storey elevation, and the footings of an original feature can still be seen above the wall-head. The exterior is finished in herring-bone-stugged red ashlar with polished raised margins, and the roofs are covered with slate.
The warehouse range, which is currently used for storage, has most openings blocked or fitted with timber louvers. The three inner bays, which may have originally been domestic, were built first and later extended to the north and south in a manner that is sympathetic to the original design, although the bays are now irregular and there are band courses between the floors. The northern gable facing Nicholson Street has four unequal bays and an attic opening, with a gabled pulley hoist located over the wall-head on the southern extension. At the rear, there are single-storey weaving sheds supported by wooden roofs on cast-iron columns, along with a three-storey, six-bay block.
The row of houses consists of eight bays in total, originally featuring eight doors, including closes and pend. One door has been converted into a window, and the pair of houses nearest to the north has been combined into a single dwelling. The remainder of the row was unoccupied as of 1987. The houses have a band course between the floors, an eaves/lintel band, skews, and both end and axial stacks.
