Description
Elshieshields Bridge is a road bridge built in 1825, as indicated by an indistinct datestone. It is a single, wide segmental arch spanning the Water of Ae. The bridge is constructed of bull-faced, channelled red ashlar and voussoirs. A band sits below the ramped and coped parapets, which have diagonally droved inner faces and square piers leading to slightly curved approaches. The bridge is situated in Kirkmichael Parish. Notes from the National Records of Scotland dated 1837 include a plan and elevation, believed to be from around 1900. Further details are recorded in the Minutes of the Commissioners of Supply, held in the Ewart Library, Dumfries.
