Description
Corncockle is an earlier or mid-19th century single-story and attic, three-bay cottage. The front elevation, facing west, exhibits a castellated design inspired by the work of Batty Langley. The exterior is constructed from unusually large, coursed, stugged, and painted ashlar blocks, with polished red dressings and a distinctive frontispiece. A central bay is advanced and flanked by castellated pilaster shafts, featuring cusped ornamentation above the openings. Crenellations mark a courtyard to the west, and a gable is present at the attic level. Two tapered columns are positioned in antis above the recessed front door. The outer bays feature hood-moulded tripartite windows with blind outer lights. Piended dormers and a cornice are also present, along with straight skews topped with pinnacles over the angles. Chimneys are located at the ends of the cottage, and the roof is covered with graded slates, with the main roofline sweeping down to a low level at the rear. A walled garden extends to the front, west side, and a steading adjoins the cottage at the rear. The steading is not included in the listing.
