Description
Kirkmadrine Church and Burial-Ground features a mausoleum-chapel built in the late 19th century. This rectangular building is designed in a Romanesque style, consisting of a nave and a smaller chancel to the east. It is constructed of rubble with red sandstone dressings and has narrow arched lights on its walls. The roof is made of grey slate, complemented by red sandstone skews and skewputts. The west elevation includes a gabled entrance porch that houses a collection of carved stones. A cross is positioned at the apex of the gablehead.
The graveyard contains a variety of predominantly 19th century headstone graves, including several column memorials. A notable feature is a cross memorial on a mound to the south of the burial chapel, dedicated to John McTaggart esquire of Ardwell, dated 18 October 1810. The graveyard is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall, which includes two pairs of rock-faced square-plan gatepiers. The entrance gatepiers are topped with pyramidal caps.
