Description

The lighthouse, keepers’ houses, engine house, and associated structures form a significant coastal complex built in 1828 by Robert Stevenson, with later additions in 1894 by D A Stevenson. The lighthouse itself is a tall, circular tower constructed of painted rubble with painted ashlar dressings. It features narrow windows and a door on the east side, with three windows facing west, three to the southeast, and two to the northeast. A corbelled gallery with a latticed metal railing surrounds the top, surmounted by a domed lantern with three rows of triangular framed glazing. A semicircular wing, formerly used for fuel storage, encircles the base to the west, bowing outwards and featuring windows facing northwest, west, and southwest, along with doorways on either side of the tower. Modern glazing is present. The interior was not inspected in 1993.

Adjacent to the east of the lighthouse, within an enclosure, are the lighthouse keepers' houses, comprising a single-storey range with slightly lower wings extending to the north and south, providing two separate dwellings. The buildings are constructed of painted rubble with painted, droved ashlar dressings, featuring raised margins and a band course above the windows of the main block, as well as a base course and a blocking course. Three rendered coped axial stacks rise from the roofs. The west elevation originally had eight bays, six initially, with the third and sixth bays projecting and surmounted by pediments containing doors. Later, smaller windows replaced some of the original openings in the outer bays; recessed wings on either side each contain a bipartite window (originally a door). A wall adjoins the outer bays of the main block, extending to the semicircular wing of the lighthouse tower. The east elevation has a six-bay main block with advanced and pedimented bays on either side, and regular fenestration. The north and south elevations feature harled lower wings with doors and windows.

To the south, within the enclosure, is the engine house and an adjoining house, both with flat roofs and an axial stack. The engine house has small-paned glazing and is arranged with a five-bay (two-three bay) section to the north and a three-bay house to the right; each includes doors and windows. The southern elevation has eight bays, with a door in the left-hand bay and windows in the remaining bays.

The enclosure walls, constructed of painted rubble, form the perimeter of the complex and include a pair of block-capped square gatepiers to the west and north. A cultivation enclosure is adjoined to the east, incorporating a stone gateway. A foghorn, also designed by D A Stevenson, is located on a slope to the south. A gabled outbuilding, potentially a former byre, stands to the northeast, built of painted rubble with a slate roof, featuring two doors at the center facing east, later machinery doors, four windows to the west, and a ridge stack. A rubble wall runs across the headland to the west, with three painted block-capped square gatepiers.
