Description
These conservatories and a boiler house were built in 1923 as part of the Crichton Royal Hospital complex by Mackenzie and Moncur Ltd. The structures consist of a long range of single-storey glasshouses with a teak frame and glass panels. A slightly more prominent gabled glasshouse is positioned at both the centre and the end of the range. A glazed link connects the conservatories to a potting house located at the rear of the central section. A boiler house is situated in the basement beneath the complex. The buildings are built upon a base wall constructed of unpainted cement-rendered brick. The timber framing features chamfered details and cast-iron braces, while the windows are pivot sashes with their original opening mechanism. Original pipes and floor ventilation are still present. Original drawings are held by Mr Carson, and photographic copies are available at the National Monuments Record of Scotland in Edinburgh.
