Description
Baldoon Mains is a single-storey, cellar and attic cottage, dating from around 1830. It has an L-plan layout, with a five-bay front and a two-bay rear wing. The cottage is constructed of rubble walls with raised sandstone margins and rusticated quoins, while the gable walls are harled. A distinctive feature is the tetrastyle Roman Doric portico on the left-hand side, complete with a cornice and blocking course. Single-light, margined windows are located on either side of the portico. Four later gabled dormerheads in sandstone have been added to the right-hand side. Most windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, apart from the dormers which have 16 panes. A corniced eaves line runs around the building. Tall corniced axial and end stacks are also present. The roof was partially re-roofed around 1970, with rubberoid tiles on the front section, although the original graded slate roof has largely been retained at the rear. The addition of four dormers is considered regrettable. Since the original listing, seven uPVC windows with mock astragals have been inserted without planning permission. A steading is located nearby.
