Description
These are a pair of sophisticated Renaissance gate piers dating to the mid-17th century. They originally formed part of the formal entrance to Baldoon Castle. The gate piers are square and feature alternating bands of lozenge-cut and stylised rock-faced rustication. They are topped with a cornice and moulded scroll caps, creating the appearance of an open-topped pediment over the former gateway.
The piers represent a rare and high-quality example of Renaissance architecture in this area of Scotland. Baldoon Castle, where the story of The Bride of Lammermuir by Sir Walter Scott is set, is nearby, with ruinous remains of the castle still visible.
