Description
1 Castle Bank in Kirkcudbright is a pair of T-plan houses dating from the mid-19th century or earlier, with some early 20th century additions and alterations. These two-storey and attic houses are prominently located in the center of town, next to MacLellan's Castle. Number 1, on the left, has three bays and a central entrance, while Number 3, to the right, is two bays wide and features a later curved flat roof section at the corner of High Street. The building has four slated catslide dormers and is finished in harled and painted surfaces, with smooth painted margins around the doors and windows.
The windows are timber sash and case, featuring various glazing patterns. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are rendered chimney stacks at the ridge and gables. A low, flat coped rubble wall encloses the front garden, and there are squared ashlar gatepiers with ball finials in front of Number 1.
Inside, the main rooms have dado panelling, and there are cusp-headed panels flanking a chimneypiece on the ground floor.
