Description
North Cottage at Kirkwood Stables was built mainly in the first half of the 19th century, incorporating some earlier structures. It combines stables and main buildings with cottages and kennels, all arranged around an open court. The barn features an unusually large horsemill. The buildings are constructed from whitewashed rubble with ashlar dressings and contrasting painted margins, while the roofs are mostly covered with graded slates.
To the west, the cottages consist of a pair of single-storey and possibly raised attic three-bay cottages that share a common gable and have broad-eaved dormers. They feature wide doorways and sash windows with four-pane glazing, along with end stacks that have projecting caps.
The kennels are located to the southwest. The barn to the north includes a dovecot in the west gable head and an outshot facing the court, with the eastern range now serving as a house. The horsemill, which is unusually large with a shallow-pitched roof, is attached to the north wall of the barn. An L-plan block, which includes the stables, closes the court to the south and east.
