Description
West Lodge at Dalton House dates from around 1840 and features a lodge and gatepiers, with some sympathetic additions, including a late 19th century eastern wing. The building is constructed from stugged red ashlar with polished dressings, and the eastern wing is also in this style.
The lodge originally has a T-shaped plan, with a south-facing door located in the re-entrant angle. The eastern wing is recessed along the long wall that faces the road. The building has open-pedimented gables with windows set in projecting bays, which are canted towards the main road on the west side. It features sash windows with lying-pane glazing and has corniced axial stacks, with only one ashlar flue; the others are brick-built. The roofs are covered with slate.
The gatepiers consist of four tall piers, each topped with a dentilled cornice. The inner piers are octagonal, while the outer piers are square. There are low quadrants with spiked cast-iron railings, although the gates have been removed.
