Description

Holme House is an early 19th-century single-storey and attic building with a symmetrical H-plan layout. It was formerly a rear service wing attached to a U-plan two-storey house that was demolished around 1970. The structure features squared pinned rubble walling with polished quoins and hoodmoulds above all openings, as well as architraves on the north elevation. The south elevation, which used to connect to the main house, now appears somewhat truncated and has modern roughcast walling, with windows that have smooth raised margins and modern timber doors.

The north elevation is a symmetrical five-bay design with advanced scrolled Dutch gabled end bays. It has a centrally placed canted window featuring lying-pane glazing and French doors, topped by a gabled pediment. Both the west and east wings are also five-bay structures, with the east wing featuring central wide double-leaf timber doors and a round-headed tunnel dormer above, which includes a tripartite light added around 1970. Original dormers with timber barge-boarded gables have been removed, with some replaced by skylights.

The windows are sash and case style, with either 12 or 4-pane glazing. The building has an eaves cornice and a deep coped parapet on all sides except the south elevation. The north elevation showcases finely detailed curvilinear gables with urn finials on pedestals flanking and at the apex of the gables. The south elevation has plain gables with similarly placed urns. The building is topped with tall corniced axial stacks located at the centre wallhead on the south side, featuring prominent barley-sugar twist cans arranged in groups of three. The roofs are covered with slate.
