Description
The Queensberry Arms Hotel, located at 71-72 Main Street, Kirkconnel, is likely to date from the early 19th century. Originally a 4-bay hotel, two further, narrower bays were added to the east side of the building later in the 19th century, maintaining a consistent character. The hotel is constructed of painted stugged ashlar with contrasting margins, with the west gable being harled. The original entrance door is located off-centre, contained within a simple doorcase featuring a block pediment, and a window to the left has been blocked up. A public bar door was added to the left bay of the later eastern addition, probably around 1900, and is characterised by a bracketed cornice. Two plate glass bar windows are present; the remaining windows are sash windows with lying panes. An eaves cornice runs around the building, and there are four corniced apex stacks, with the stack on the west gable rebuilt in brick. The public bar interior contains fittings, a counter, seats, and a ceiling dating from around 1900, which incorporate Art Nouveau details.
