Description

The building is a former school known as the North Building of the Ludgate Infant School, likely designed by Adam Frame, and dates from the later 19th century. It is a well-detailed, single-storey, six-bay, rectangular neo-classical structure, prominently located on raised ground at a busy roundabout. This building was originally part of an earlier Infant School complex. The exterior features channelled polished ashlar on a partly raised basement made of squared and coursed rock-faced rubble, with a cill course at the north and south, an eaves cornice, and a deep blocking course.

The principal elevation faces east towards Ludgate and has a gabled design. It includes a tripartite window with Corinthian columned mullions, a bracketed moulded cill, and a consoled pediment with a blind oculus in the tympanum. The entrance elevation on the north side has a small ashlar porch at the center, flanked by a two-leaf panelled timber door on the left and windows in the adjacent bays. The southern side features regular fenestration.

The windows have a combination of single pane over two-pane and plate glass glazing patterns, with top-opening windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and red ridge tiles, featuring a center ventilator. There are coped ashlar stacks and ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, there is a large hall supported by five ironwork roof trusses, which are partially obscured by a suspended ceiling. The doorways are architraved and corniced.

The boundary walls consist of squared rubble, with some sections low and topped with saddleback coping, along with inset decorative cast iron railings. The entrance features ashlar and snecked rubble gatepiers and a decorative cast iron gate.
