Description

Mayfield is a two-storey, two-bay L-plan house located on Willowbrae Road in Edinburgh, designed by T G Leadbetter, J M Fairley, and R S Reid in 1914. The house features 17th century Scottish detailing, including a conical-roofed circular entrance tower at the re-entrant angle, which is corbelled out at the first floor. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and is harled at the rear. It has crowstepped gables and bowed corners that are corbelled to square at the first floor. The gable-headed dormers on the rendered sections break the eaves and have coped skews.

On the south and west principal elevations, there is a modern glazed door set in a roll-moulded surround leading into the entrance tower, along with a window on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays on the south and west sides has one bay, with regular fenestration and a projecting asymmetrical gable stack on the west side.

The east rear elevation includes a modern extension at the ground floor and features two small windows in the gable. The north rear elevation has three irregularly placed windows on the ground floor, flanked by a pair of lean-to outhouses that have crowstepped skews and grey slate roofs. The first floor has three evenly spaced gablet-headed dormers with coped skews.

The house predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows and is roofed with grey slates. It has corniced stacks with cylindrical cans.

The boundary wall and railings consist of a low ashlar-coped rubble wall on the south and west sides, with plain cast-iron railings and a wrought-iron gate supported by decorative wrought-iron piers.
