Description
176-180 Canongate is a four-storey, ten-bay rectangular-plan tenement block built in 1755 and reconstructed in 1955 by Gordon and Dey. The building features random rubble construction with sandstone ashlar dressings and has a corniced eaves course. The windows are architraved with long and short margins. Bays 3 to 7 on the left are united by a single architrave for the first and second floor windows, which have ashlar panels between them and scrolled open pediments in relief. The fenestration is wider in the bays above and to the right of the pend, which has a large basket arch and an armorial panel above it. The rear courtyard elevation to the south has three bays and a full-height turn-pike stair tower on the left, with later bipartite windows on each floor to the right and a canted bay on the outer right.
The interior has been extensively modernised in 1956 to accommodate the Moray House Institute of Education, including classrooms, staff studies, and a proscenium theatre, as observed during a resurvey in 2007. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a Scottish slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
